Malabar spinach is a fast-growing, twining vine with thick, succulent stems and glossy, fleshy leaves that are harvested as a warm-season “spinach.” In summer it sends up little spikes of tiny white flowers, followed by very juicy berries that ripen from red to deep purple-black. It’s loved because it stays productive in hot, humid weather—when true spinach usually gives up—and it also looks great climbing a trellis as an edible ornamental.

Scientific Name Basella alba
Family / Genus Basellaceae / Basella
Origin Native to tropical Asia; widely cultivated across China, and in the south it can escape cultivation and become naturalized.
Aliases Ceylon Spinach, Climbing Spinach, Indian Spinach, Vine Spinach
