Spanish needles (Bidens pilosa) is a fast-growing annual wildflower in the daisy family that pops up wherever there’s open ground—roadsides, field edges, village paths, and sunny margins. Its small flower heads are often modest and understated, but the plant more than makes up for it with its famous “hitchhiking” seeds: slim black achenes tipped with barbed bristles that cling stubbornly to socks, pet fur, and anything else passing by. It’s widely naturalized in warm regions and is also well known as a commonly gathered traditional herb in many places.

Scientific Name Bidens pilosa
Family / Genus Asteraceae / Bidens
Origin Found across East, Central, South, and Southwest China; commonly grows near villages, along roadsides, and in open woodland and field margins.
