Red-backed Alchornea is a warm-climate deciduous shrub prized for its two-tone foliage: the leaves look smooth green on top, but flip them over and you’ll see the signature pale reddish underside that gives the plant its common name. It’s also dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate plants—an interesting detail if you’re hoping to see fruit. In nature it lives in the warm, humid parts of southern China, often in semi-shaded scrub or open woodland, and it has a history of local traditional use where a decoction of branches and leaves has been used externally as a wash for itchy rashes.

Scientific Name Alchornea trewioides
Family / Genus Euphorbiaceae / Alchornea
Origin Native to southern China, recorded from Fujian (south and west), Jiangxi (south), Hunan (south), Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Typically found in low scrub on coastal plains or inland hills, in open woodland understory, and in limestone scrub.
