Chinese firethorn is a tough, evergreen shrub with thorny branches, grown for its airy clusters of small white spring flowers followed by showy bunches of orange-red to deep red berries that can hang on well into winter. It loves sun, shrugs off poorer soils once established, and takes pruning beautifully—so it’s equally at home as a clipped hedge, an espalier against a wall, or a fruiting bonsai/penjing specimen.

Scientific Name Pyracantha fortuneana
Family / Genus Rosaceae / Pyracantha
Origin Native to China; widely found south of the Yellow River, especially across the southwest, typically on sunny (south-facing) slopes.
Aliases Firethorn, Fortune'S Firethorn
