Chinese xylosma (Xylosma congesta) is a tough, good-looking evergreen that naturally forms a neat large shrub or small tree. In spring it produces small, subtle flowers, and later it may carry round black berries that often linger into winter—an easy way to add year-round structure and a bit of seasonal fruit interest. It’s notably adaptable: happy in full sun, tolerant of drought and lean soils once established, and able to handle light frost, which makes it a dependable choice for low-maintenance landscaping and hedging. In some areas it’s also valued for its wood.

Scientific Name Xylosma congesta
Family / Genus Salicaceae / Xylosma
Origin Native to China south of the Qinling Mountains and south of the Yangtze River; typically found in shrubland near woodland edges, sunny dry slopes, hills, plains, and around villages.
Aliases Xunmu, Xylosma
