Bur clover (Medicago polymorpha) is a cheerful little annual (sometimes short-lived biennial) legume that forms low, spreading patches of trifoliate leaves and tiny yellow pea-flowers. After blooming, it produces its signature curled, prickly “bur” seed pods that happily hitch a ride on fur and clothing. Gardeners and growers value it less as a showpiece and more as a hardworking helper: it fixes nitrogen, builds soil, and works well as forage, cover crop, or green manure—tolerating everything from moderately moist ground to semi-dry conditions once established.

Scientific Name Medicago polymorpha
Family / Genus Fabaceae / Medicago
Origin Native and widely naturalized in warm-temperate to subtropical regions; in China it is common south of the Yangtze River and also occurs in Shaanxi, Gansu, Guizhou, and Yunnan, often cultivated or semi-wild along fields and roadsides.
Aliases Annual Bur Clover, Burr Medic, Toothed Medic
