Short-Spiked Copperleaf (Acalypha brachystachya) is a small, softly hairy annual herb in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). It naturally pops up in damp, lightly shaded places—think stream edges, moist grassy slopes, and woodland paths—and in a garden it can behave like a seasonal, self-seeding “summer groundcover” in naturalistic plantings. Its thin, papery leaves are egg-shaped to diamond-ovate, and it produces subtle axillary flower spikes from late spring into summer, followed by capsule fruits that mature and shed seed well into autumn.

Scientific Name Acalypha brachystachya
Family / Genus Euphorbiaceae / Acalypha
Origin Native to much of China. Typically found on moist grassy slopes, roadsides, stream banks, and grassy paths within or near woodland.
Aliases Acalypha, Copperleaf
