Cogon grass is a tough, perennial, sun-loving grass that forms dense, spreading clumps from underground rhizomes. It carries narrow, linear leaves (often rolled inward) and produces striking silky white, plume-like flower heads. It’s impressively adaptable—handling drought once established and also coping with temporary flooding—so it can thrive in many “hard” sites like sandy riverbanks, coastal areas, and disturbed ground. Those fluffy plumes can look especially pretty from autumn into winter, but the plant can also spread aggressively where conditions suit it, so it’s best grown with a little planning and containment.

Scientific Name Imperata cylindrica
Family / Genus Poaceae / Imperata
Origin Native across much of Asia; in China it is widespread in northern provinces and occurs in low hills and plains, especially along riverbanks, sandy meadows, coastal habitats, and even desert margins.
Aliases Blady Grass, Japanese Bloodgrass, Kunai Grass
