Pond cypress is a deciduous conifer prized for its slim, spire-like silhouette and soft, feathery-looking branchlets that give it a graceful, airy feel. In the wild it’s a true wetland specialist—happy along pond margins and in seasonally flooded ground—often developing a swollen, buttressed trunk base and the famous “cypress knees” (woody root projections) in waterlogged soils. Come autumn, its foliage shifts to a warm, rich brown before dropping, making it a standout choice for lakesides, rain gardens, and naturalistic landscapes where moisture is a challenge for other trees.
