Often mistaken for a palm, Sago Palm is actually a cycad—an ancient, extremely slow-growing plant with a chunky, textured trunk topped by a neat rosette of stiff, arching fronds. It brings instant “tropical” structure to patios and bright rooms, but it isn’t a soft-and-cuddly houseplant: the leaflets are sharp, and the whole plant (especially the seeds) is highly poisonous, so it needs respectful handling and smart placement.

Scientific Name Cycas revoluta
Family / Genus Cycadaceae / Cycas
Origin Southern Japan (Ryukyu Islands), widely cultivated elsewhere
Aliases Cycas, Japanese Sago Palm, King Sago, Sago Cycad
