Ferns are living time-capsules—some of the oldest plants on Earth, with a history stretching back more than 300 million years. Instead of flowers or seeds, they reproduce using tiny spores formed in little structures (sporangia) on the undersides of their fronds. Those feathery, lacy fronds unfurl from curled “fiddleheads,” giving ferns their famously elegant, fresh-green look. Many popular house ferns also help make indoor air feel nicer by adding humidity, and they’re at their happiest in shady, consistently moist conditions.
