Sweet osmanthus (桂花) is a beloved evergreen shrub or small tree famous for its clouds of tiny flowers and a rich, sugary fragrance that can perfume an entire garden—especially in autumn. Many forms bloom in warm orange-yellow tones, and the blossoms are not just pretty: they’re traditionally used to scent tea and flavor desserts, syrups, and drinks. In mild climates it’s a dependable landscape plant; in colder areas it’s often grown in a pot so it can be sheltered for winter.
