Garden balsam is a charming, old-fashioned cottage-garden annual loved for its bright, ruffled blooms that can look like tiny camellias or roses. Flowers appear snug against the stems in the leaf axils and come in lively shades of pink, red, purple, and white—often with doubles and bicolors that feel delightfully “pompom-like.” It’s also famous for its “impatient” seed pods: once ripe, they pop open with a light touch and fling seeds away, which is exactly how this plant happily self-sows and returns year after year in many gardens.
