Water Spangles

Air Purifying Child Safe Family & Genus
admin March 25, 2026 5 min read

Water spangles is a sweet, tidy-looking floating aquatic fern that can quickly knit itself into soft green mats on calm water. It has a signature “rule of three” look: two small floating fronds that sit on the surface like paired little leaves, plus a third frond that hangs underwater and breaks into fine, root-like threads—yet the plant has no true roots at all. Popular in water gardens for its delicate texture, it can also soak up nutrients and offer gentle shade in still ponds when kept neatly thinned.

Scientific Name Salvinia natans
Family / Genus Salviniaceae / Salvinia
Origin Widely distributed across China, including regions south of the Yangtze River as well as parts of North China, Northeast China, and the Qinling area. Typically found floating on still or slow-moving freshwater such as rice paddies, ditches, and quiet streams/pond surfaces.
