Greater periwinkle (Vinca major) is an evergreen, trailing subshrub that’s famous for quickly carpeting the ground with shiny green leaves. In spring it pops out charming violet-blue to pale lavender, pinwheel-like flowers, then may toss in a few extra blooms on and off when the weather stays mild. It’s a classic choice for woodland-style gardens because it handles partial shade beautifully and likes soil that stays gently moist—though in colder regions it may need winter protection, and in mild climates it can spread enthusiastically if you don’t keep it in bounds.
