Yellow sweet clover is a tough, fast-growing biennial legume that rises on upright, much-branched stems with classic three-part (trifoliate) leaves. In season it sends up slender flower clusters from the leaf axils, packed with many tiny yellow, pea-shaped blooms that can be pleasantly fragrant and very attractive to pollinators. After flowering, it forms small egg-shaped pods containing smooth yellow-brown seeds—one reason it can readily reseed itself if left unmanaged.

Scientific Name Melilotus officinalis
Family / Genus Fabaceae / Melilotus
Origin Widely cultivated and commonly seen across China; originally native to Eurasia and widely naturalized elsewhere.
Aliases Common Melilot, Sweet Clover, Yellow Melilot
