Pansies are cheerful cool-season favorites with those unmistakable “face-like” blooms—often in bold mixes of purple, yellow, white, blue, and just about every other shade breeders can dream up. They make compact little mounds of green leaves and flower generously in spring and fall (and even through mild winters). Give them bright light, consistently moist but well-drained soil, and they’ll reward you; give them heat or soggy roots, and they’ll sulk fast.

Scientific Name Viola × wittrockiana
Family / Genus Violaceae / Viola
Origin Northern Europe (horticultural origin; developed in Europe from Viola species including Viola tricolor). Native relatives (notably Viola tricolor) are widespread across Europe, including England.
