August Lily (Hosta plantaginea) is a much-loved, shade-garden classic that makes a lush mound of glossy green leaves and then surprises you in late summer with big, waxy, trumpet-shaped white flowers. The blooms are famously sweet-scented—strongest in the evening and at night—so it’s one of those plants you’ll want near a path, patio, or open window. In China it has a long history of cultivation (dating back to the Han Dynasty) and became especially valued as an ornamental during the Tang Dynasty.
