Cypress is a much-loved group of conifer trees famous for their clean, architectural silhouettes—often columnar or conical—and their dense, aromatic foliage made of tiny scale-like or short needle-like leaves. Many are evergreen and stay handsome year-round, while a famous “cypress” look-alike, Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum), drops its soft needles in autumn and turns a rich copper color before winter. Long-lived, tough, and often planted around temples and memorials, cypress has a reputation for quiet strength and endurance.
