Lady palm (Rhapis excelsa) is a classic indoor palm with a slightly “different” look: it grows in tidy clumps of slender, bamboo-like canes topped with bold, fan-shaped leaves. Each leaf is divided into stiff, blunt-ended segments, giving it a sculptural, architectural feel that instantly makes entryways and large rooms look greener. It’s slow-growing (a virtue indoors), long-lived, and famously tolerant of lower light compared with many other palms—making it a top pick for beginners. Variegated and compact forms are popular for smaller homes, and the foliage is also loved as florist greenery; young plants can even be trained into bonsai-style compositions.

Scientific Name Rhapis excelsa
Family / Genus Arecaceae / Rhapis
